Handling Performance Anxiety
GMG Music Center is a performance based music school. One of our goals is to build the confidence our students when it comes to performing for an audience. One of the most frequently asked questions by students when it comes to performing is:
  • How can I handle performance anxiety?
There is no specific formula that helps every student take away performance anxiety, but one thing is for sure, the more you perform the more you get used to being in front of an audience. Each musician creates his/her way of dealing with nerves. Mr. Chris says that having a clear game plan of his performance helps, from transitions to adlib ideas. He says he never wants to be in the dark. He also likes exploring the venue that he performs at so that he can become comfortable with his environment. Mr. Goodwin, the vocal and piano instructor says that he makes sure that he is mentally prepared and knows his audience as well as his material. He encourages students to be familiar and comfortable with their piece so that you

This is always an exciting time for the students participating as well as the staff here at GMG Music Center. Students have the opportunity to play in a band even if they've never experienced it before! They will also have the opportunity to participate in guided band rehearsals, instrument classes and even one on one instruction as needed. The Summer Music Academy goes beyond the normal summer camp and gives students the opportunity to produce an end product. Each summer we encourage the community to come out and support the talented musicians and also donate canned food items to a local organization. The Summer Music Academy allows students to experience music from a new and exciting perspective! No matter what the style of music may be, the Summer Music Academy leaves each musician with improved playing ability, an opportunity to record an original song and increased knowledge of the music industry as they interact with other musicians their age, musical interest and level of experience. If you are looking for an exciting music experience for your child this summer consider enrolling him/her in the Summer Music Academy. They will not forget their expeirience and the memories will last a lifetime! Contact the office for more information at 803.728.3399.
can adjust to any atmosphere without having to focus on the mechanics of your song selection. Again, there is no one secret that will take away the nerves, in fact Mr. Gray said although he has been performing for years he still sometimes get the nervous butterfly, but the experience definitely helps it not be so bad. Mr. Gray said one of the best tips is to simply have fun because if you are enjoying your performance most likely so is your audience!
Hannah Student of the Month.jpg
Hannah is GMG's Student of the Month! Congratulations! Hannah is only 5 years old and it's pretty amazing to see such a young student progress in music the way she has. In fact her drum instructor, Mr. Chris just finished assembling her first drum set. Hannah has a drive to learn and is very attentive to the instructions of her teacher. Her mom is a vital part of her progress and we at GMG Music Center appreciate her because of her deep level of involvement. She sits in each of her private classes and communicates with Mr. Chris about her daughter's progress. You can see the excitement in Hannah's eyes each time she comes to class. She is a star student and definitely a young musician to watch out for! Check out her video!
Congratulations Hannah!

creative and positive art activities. GMG Music & Arts Foundation, formally known as Orangeburg for the Arts, Inc., was founded by Mrs. Gray in 2004 in a meeting of the minds for the Orangeburg County Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Council. GMG Music & Arts Foundation promotes self-expression and youth empowerment through the arts. Some past projects included Life through the Eyes of a Child made possible through a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. This project exposed youth to a summer photography program. Music Matters was another project funded through the GMG Music & Arts Foundation which provided students with the opportunity to take summer music exploration classes. GMG Music & Arts Foundation board decided in 2012 to change its name to be able to reach beyond the geographical location of Orangeburg, SC with the possibility of expanding nationwide. For right now the focus is to serve youth with the development and implementation of youth oriented art programs.
